New Year's 1024x768/800x600/640x480

It's the first day back in the office for at least most of the team (a few hardy souls having staggered in yesterday while the rest of us were in cars/trains/bed. And what better way to begin the new year than to do a quick round-robin of New Year's Resolutions? The answer: Another week off! But since that's apparently not on the cards...

Ian: I'm going to get Vista running as well as XP currently does on my main home machine - if it means stripping it back to the most basic settings and cloning my XP desktop, then so be it!

Richard: I really need to get in the habit of upgrading my PCs... ever... I'd also like to spend some more time poking around with the big pile of multimedia tools in my study, instead of just having shrinkwrapped copies of things like Photoshop to annoy artists who can't afford them.

Alex: Primarily this year I'm going to build a living room PC that doesn't react with a different crash every time I switch it on. It's starting to get frustrating now. Explorer is dead? GREAT! Unspecified Error? WOO! Operating System not found? HOORAY!

But that's not all. I'm going to find a use for my Mac other than web browsing or video converting. I'm going to attempt to like a PC game which is neither ASCII based nor made by an obscure bedroom developer. I'm going to write a text adventure and not give up three rooms in. I'm going to learn to take a proper photograph instead of a blurry mess. I might even attempt to say something nice about Windows Vista. But don't hold your breath on that last one.

Orestis: (is too busy playing Eve)

Leet Safecracking Skillz

This morning, a parcel arrived for me - a Frontier Safe from Extensis, and a cryptic note warning that the top secret combination would be e-mailed across to us at some point during Macworld.

The safecracking process took roughly forty seconds, no stethoscope required. Our prize? A very crinkled T-Shirt. And the satisfaction of starting the day feeling like hardened criminal geniuses, instead of geeky journalists defeating a child's toy. There are worse ways of starting the year.
